Neural Manipulation

Assessment and mobilization of peripheral nerves, plexuses and the central nervous system using palpatory listening to nerve tension and pulsation. The method was developed by Jean-Pierre Barral in collaboration with French osteopath Alain Croibier.

Step-by-step program

NM1 Neuromeningeal Manipulation: An Integrative Approach to Trauma +

Nerve manipulation was developed in clinical practice by Jean-Pierre Barral in collaboration with French osteopath Alain Croibier. The method examines the mechanical relationship between the skull, spine, and nerve and meningeal elements, making it possible to locate and release local nerve restrictions. The course focuses in particular on the effects of whiplash injury.

  • Anatomy and physiology of treating whiplash and other post-traumatic situations.
  • Locating and releasing soft tissue within the meningeal system; assessment of cervical injuries.
  • Tests evaluating restriction patterns in the cervico-shoulder region.
  • Global techniques — the collision forces in whiplash affect the whole body, not just the cervical segment.
  • Applying the principles of visceral manipulation in patients after whiplash or other trauma.

Prerequisites: entry level

NM2 Peripheral Nerve Manipulation; Upper Body +

Assessment and treatment techniques for the peripheral nerves of the upper body.

  • Anatomy and function of the peripheral nerves of the upper body.
  • Typical pain patterns resulting from peripheral nerve dysfunction.
  • Evaluation and treatment techniques restoring proper nerve function.
  • Various methods of releasing nerve restrictions — practical application during sessions.

Prerequisites: NM1

NM3 Peripheral Nerve Manipulation; Lower Body +

Assessment and treatment techniques for the peripheral nerves of the lower body.

  • Anatomy and function of the peripheral nerves of the lower body.
  • Typical pain patterns resulting from peripheral nerve dysfunction.
  • Evaluation and treatment techniques restoring proper nerve function.
  • Various methods of releasing nerve restrictions — practical application during sessions.

Prerequisites: NM1 and NM2

NM4 Cranial Nerve Manipulation +

Assessment and treatment techniques for the brain and cranial nerves.

  • Anatomy and function of the brain and cranial nerves; typical pain patterns resulting from their dysfunction.
  • Techniques distinguishing whether a fixation lies in the skull, the sutures, or the brain itself.
  • How brain compression and intracranial pressure affect the functioning of the whole body.
  • Cranial techniques restoring proper function — practical application.

Prerequisites: NM1, NM2 and NM3

NM5 Neural Manipulation 5: Central and Peripheral Connections +

The newest extension of the NM concept, building on techniques from modules NM1–NM4 and covering areas of the nervous system still being explored in clinical practice.

  • A new perspective on working with the vagus nerve and the pudendal nerve.
  • The trigeminal and mandibular nerves — their relationship with the temporomandibular joint, hypoglossal nerve and lingual nerve.
  • The vestibulocochlear nerve, along with work on the olfactory nerve and the vomeronasal organ.
  • Mechanics of the medullary cone — cauda equina and filum terminale; pudendal and coccygeal nerves.
  • Time permitting: the suboccipital, obturator, musculocutaneous, long thoracic and phrenic nerves.

Prerequisites: NM1, NM2, NM3 and NM4
